Counterfeit Detection Device FAQs

With so many different options to choose from in Dri Mark’s catalog of detectors it can be easy to get overwhelmed with questions. Questions like, which device is best for me? How does each device work? What do these devices even detect? Get to know Dri Mark’s full line of counterfeit detectors with the answers to some of our most frequently asked questions below.

The Counterfeit Detector Pen

Do the pens work on currencies other than the US Dollar? No, Dri Mark counterfeit detector pens only work to detect the linen/cotton blend that only US currency is printed on.

Do the pens work on old and new bills? Yes, old, and new US money is all printed on the same linen/cotton blend of paper.

Why did the pen give me a positive result when the bill was phony? Counterfeit detector pens are reliable on most common counterfeit notes which are scanned and printed on copy or typing paper using laser or inkjet printers. Some counterfeiters use a process commonly referred to as bleaching to defeat the counterfeit detector pens’ accuracy. A single or five-dollar bill is soaked in a solvent, and the ink is removed. The blank currency paper is then overprinted with a higher denomination. Because this type of counterfeit is now printed on currency stock, the pen does not work.

Does the ink mark on legitimate money ever disappear? Yes, over time the ink on legitimate bills fades and eventually disappears entirely.

The Dual Test

Once the Dual Detector pen runs out can you replace it with a new pen? Yes, you can buy replacement counterfeit detector pens HERE.

Can you use the device on currencies other than the US Dollar? The detector pen will only work to detect the linen/cotton blend that only US currency is printed on. However, the UV light that can be found in the cap of the Dual Detector reveals UV security markings on drivers’ licenses, credit cards, passports, international currencies, cashier’s checks, money orders and more.
